March '10       A dozen new Beacons announced

Twelve of the very best learning and skills sector organisations – including further education colleges, local adult learning providers, a work-based learning provider and an independent specialist college – have had their excellence rewarded with Beacon status.

Fircroft College of Adult Education is one of just five specialist residential colleges in the country. It offers over 150 different residential short courses running throughout the year, covering literacy, numeracy and IT skills as well as personal and professional development.

Joseph Chamberlain College has gained a major accolade after being judged this year's best public building in the country. The honour - announced by culture secretary Ben Bradshaw - came with a tribute from Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
